Sleeping Arrangements:

Each yurt sleeps 5 people. There are 3 single beds (2 bunked) and 1 queen bed. Pillows and mattresses are provided, and guests should bring sleeping bags (see "What to Bring").

What to bring: Food

         (you can also melt snow on the stove)

What to bring: Gear

  • __ Backcountry skis,
         metal edges recommended
  • __ Backcountry ski boots, waterproofed
  • __ Ski poles
  • __ Climbing skins
         OR
  • __ Snowshoes or snowboard
  • __ Sleeping bag good to at least zero degrees
         (warmer is better)
  • __ Mt. Sherman and Mt. Elbert quad maps
  • __ Compass (Silva is a good brand to buy)
  • __ GPS (nice but optional)
  • __ Headlamp necessary
         (check bulb and batteries)
  • __ Internal frame backpack
  • __ Ski sled as alternative to pack
  • __ Ground cloth for emergency bivouacs
  • __ Swiss army knife or other
  • __ Candles in case mantle breaks
         in propane light

What to bring: Group Backcountry Equipment

All group members should be proficient with avalanche transceivers, avalanche awareness, and general backcountry skills.

  • __ Knowledgeable group leader
  • __ Map, compass, and the knowledge to use them
  • __ Snow shovel (small packable avalanche rescue and snow shovel
         for emergency shelter and digging)
  • __ Probe ski poles or avalanche probe poles
  • __ Large day pack
  • __ Avalanche transceivers (one per person—proficiency necessary)
  • __ Backcountry skiing working knowledge and current
         avalanche awareness skills
